So day one is over, we’ve made it in one piece. The conditions along the way were terrible but we battled on through the 26.8 miles (yep, the 0.8 matters!)
In all honestly it was pretty tough, and we found ourselves doing things badly. We had a tactic that we would run half, refuel and recover for half an hour, and then run the last half. We made the mistake of eating ALL the wrong things in that break, in particular, bread.
Sluggish and cold we made slow progress and I hit a pretty monstrous wall at mile 19.
Colin pulled me through though. Seriously didn’t feel good! But I’m a lot more optimistic today, we’ve decided refuel and break for 15 mins every 6 miles. We wouldn’t want to break at all but the kit we’re carrying on our backs makes it much more difficult to dig deep and keep running strong.
Can’t wait to get started today though! We run from Burnley to Grassington and have some lovely countryside to keep us going!
We made it! Marathon 1 is done, the weather was absolutely horrendous and all our kit is soaked now but were feeling good! Looking forward to getting some rest and recovery. Thanks for all your support today!
Well wel well… we’re in Leyburn. We’re settling down at the Golden Lion Hotel tonight and would like to thank Pam and all the staff for putting us up! This place is lovely, it’s right in the market square and a proper Yorkshire hotel. Very good beer/wine range if only we could drink the stuff (some pretty damn special speciality ales are worth the trip alone)
make sure you stay here! It’s very nice!

Hello there, I’m Sam. I’m not Colin…or Neil…but i’m going to be with them on every step of the way from Manchester to Newcastle so I thought it’s best to introduce myself as you’ll be seeing a lot of me! I’m a personal trainer and bringing my fitness/sports skillz to the mix to make sure the boys get there without injury and keep them on top form.
Once upon a time, in the pub, I’d agreed to do cycling support for Neil and Colin on this run. Carrying all the kit, food and water, first aid, rehab, filming bits etc. Now I couldn’t remember actually saying this until Neil sent me a text a few months ago. It was fine, all in the future, everything will be OK….
Well…it is until you realise
A) Have never cycled that far…
B) I don’t have a bike. Bugger.
You can see the slight flaw in that plan I’m sure. I’ve since trained and got fit enough, and borrowed a bike, although it’s only being picked up today - 2 days before we start.
I’ll be carrying all the kit - including Colin’s make-up - any first-aidy type issues we encounter (for example being attacked by nutters with crutches) and rehab stuff to keep the boys on the road. I even took one for the team and had massage lessons incase it comes to it. Shudder at the thought.
It’s great to be part of this and raise pennies for a good cause being Age UK. Really can’t wait to get started, will be an ace few days whether it rains or blows a gale, which is perfect weather for sheep chasing I believe…
